Supporting Our Community

[NEW: “Ray of Sunshine” Quilt Project]

Taree Craft Centre was formed in 1975 and has always played an important and active role within the Manning Valley community.

Over the years our members have knitted and crocheted hundreds of knee rugs and bed socks for local nursing home residents, and have also made Trauma Teddies for the Ambulance Service and participated in the “Wraps with Love” project.

More recently, warm, pure wool beanies and scarves have been knitted and sent to our Aussie troops serving overseas.

Our generous Papercraft Artists group have been busy making delightful “boomerang” Christmas cards, also to send to our overseas troops. Our soldiers add their personal messages and send them home to their loved ones.

For many years our members have sewn turbans and donated them to the Oncology Unit at Manning Hospital. The turbans are fashioned from soft fabrics and are given to women suffering the ravages of cancer treatments. Regular sewing bees are held at our Centre to produce the turbans, and these days are enjoyed immensely by our members, and it gives them a great sense of satisfaction knowing that they are providing a small comfort for women going through one of the darkest times of their lives.

Taree Craft Centre also supports cancer research by always participating in the annual “Biggest Morning Tea” and recently “The Pink Party” held in our Community Cafe raised almost $1000 for this great cause.

Since about 2002 Taree Craft Centre has sponsored a child in Africa through World Vision. Our first child and his family have now become self-sufficient and we have been allocated another child in Africa to sponsor. To help us continue this support, one of our members, who loves gardening, started donating potted plants to sell at our Craft Cottage and Daphne’s plants are now a popular item with other keen gardeners. A few other members are now bringing in plants as well, and this wonderful effort will ensure that we can continue to support the work of World Vision.

Following a request from Nurse Sally Drury, Taree Craft Centre has taken up the challenge to co-ordinate the supply of handmade quilts for the Palliative Care Ward at Taree Hospital. The quilts are used to brighten up the rooms of terminally ill patients, almost like bringing a ray of sunshine into the room, and nursing staff have witnessed the wonderful difference this can make for both the patient and visiting relatives. The quilt is then donated to the family to keep as a lasting and treasured keepsake.

The response to this project has already been amazing. So far 10 quilts have been donated and have been passed on to the hospital. Each quilt has been labelled with the name of the project and the name of the person donating the quilts. Other quilts are being produced by local patchwork groups, and wonderful volunteers are sewing at home.

Taree Craft Centre needs your help with this project. We have some donated fabric at the Craft Cottage, as well as a full roll of wadding donated by “Love Patchwork” of Harrington. The quilts are not large – they can range from 43 sq. inches, and simple, colourful patterns are ideal.

If you are able to sew a quilt for us, please get in touch. If you have new, cotton fabric you no longer need, we would love you to donate it to this project. Any assistance you are able to give will be greatly appreciated.

The aim is to give the Palliative Care Ward a stash of quilts from which to choose , and when they recognise that a patient is in need a gesture of kindness in their hour of need, they are able choose just the right quilt to present to that patient.

If you are able to assist in any way, please contact Pam Eyb on (02) 6552 5552.  Download notice
